Where to eat

Formal restaurants are few and far between, the emphasis being more on smaller places serving petiscos (smaller versions of large dishes, like tapas but usually larger). Two or three of these can provide a decent meal, there are plenty to choose from and it’s the perfect way of trying several regional dishes. Typical petiscos are pataniscas (delicious little salt-cod croquettes), gambas al ajillo (garlic shrimps) or salada de polvo (octopus salad).

Tascas are typically found in the narrow streets of the old town, and are traditionally family-run joints with paper tablecloths, serving hearty helpings of authentic Portuguese cuisine. Often one portion suffices for two. Some tascas have seen a modern makeover in recent years, but they are still faithful to local fare, albeit with a modern twist. The inconspicuous back-street eateries are usually better value than the touristy restaurants and the cafés strung along the quaysides, on both sides of the river.

A restaurante covers a whole range of eateries, from sumptuous to basic. A churrasqueira is a grill, typically serving simple fare such as grilled sardines or half chickens. A marisqueira will specialise in seafood; a cervejaria is a beer house, which normally serves seafood and steaks as well as a good choice of beers; and a confeitaria is a patisserie. Prices across the range of restaurants are fairly affordable by the standards of European capitals.
